TACO HUNT PART THREE: Tacos Sahuaro

In the third installment of the most controversial food hunt ever to hit Phoenix, Bryan Suarez and I go to the one and only Tacos Sahuaro.

Let me cut to the chase: Sahuaro is something worth trying. Although they were 86’d horchata, they had everything I was looking for in a taco spot– Amazing tortillas, flavorful meat, squeeze-bottle salsa… I was in love.

The menu at Sahuaro had a decent number of options. It was hard to choose what to order, especially as I was surrounded by five or six different “Best of Phoenix” awards at the register. Before we ordered we walked around the dining room to peep what our fellow taco fiends were munching on. It appeared that the Al Pastor gordita was the fan favorite, so naturally we added that to the list. The rest of the order is as follows:

Buche (pork stomach)

Buche, or Pork Stomach, was a necessary experience. If a restaurant actually has it, it’s probably worth trying, right? Trust me, it’s not as weird as you would think. To be honest, it doesn’t really taste like anything, which was a bit of a let down.

Al Pastor

This meet was DANK. It was fatty, salty, flavorful, and delicious. I have a lot of good things to say about this, but the most important thing to say is that this pastor is better that Tacos Huicho. YEAH WE SAID IT.

Lengua

This tongue meat was tender, not chewy, with a great texture and mouthfeel. Lengua on my lengua... a taco love story. The best part about the lengua taco is that a good squeeze of lime will change the game in the best way possible.

Cabeza

This head meat was tasty with deep, aromatic flavors. I enjoyed it.

Horchata and other Bebidas:

Unfortunately, they were out of horchata. However, I’m taking that as a good sign. It must have been delicious! We settled for the pepino and chia seed Fresca, which was fucking fire. The cantaloupe was also tasty, with the cucumber being the stronger of the two. We recommend the horchata and the pepino. If you go, report back to Hold Your Fork with a full detailed report!

Toppings:

The pickle veggie mix was very dank. Don’t you dare sleep on the carrots! The presence of squeeze bottles of hot sauce at the table was a welcome change from the inconvenient portion cups you’d find at most places. Sauces belong in squeeze bottles!

Location:

Sahuaro is located at 32nd St. and Oak, between Thomas and McDowell. It’s somewhat off the 51 so it isn’t hard to get to. There’s not a lot of parking out front, but enough to find a spot on the first go.
